Sort, Count & Discover

Make little collections and find more than one way things belong together.

  • Ages 3+ with a grown-up
  • 10–15 minutes
  • Free activity

A LITTLE PREPARATION

Before you begin

A grown-up should choose the objects. Avoid coins, beads, buttons, magnets, batteries, and other small objects that could be swallowed.

What you’ll need

  • Four to eight large, child-safe objects, such as socks, soft toys, or large blocks.
  • A clear surface to make two or three groups.

A chance to practice

Practice grouping, one-to-one counting, and comparing quantities.

GO AT YOUR OWN PACE

Let’s give it a try.

  1. Meet your collection

Place your objects where everyone can see or reach them. Name or point to each one. Start with just four if a smaller collection feels easier.

What do you notice about your objects?

  2. Choose a sorting idea

Choose one way to group them: by color, shape, size, or type. Try socks in one group and blocks in another. There can be more than one good answer.

How will you decide where each object goes?

  3. Make your groups

Place each object into a group. Explain or show why you chose that group. If an object does not fit your idea, make a new group or rethink the rule.

    Where does this one belong?

  4. Count slowly

Touch or point to each object once as you count aloud. Say one number for each object. When you finish, say how many are in that group.

    How many did you find?

  5. Compare and rearrange

Compare two groups. Which has more, fewer, or the same number? Spread one group out without adding anything, then count again to see what happened.

Did spreading them out change how many there are?

  6. Discover another way

Mix your collection and choose a different sorting idea. Invite a partner to guess your rule. Keep exploring off-screen, then put the objects back together.

How else could these objects belong together?

Make it your own.

Make it simpler

Use four large objects and two obvious groups. Count together while a grown-up points.

Try a new challenge

Create a repeating pattern using your objects, then invite a partner to continue it.

Play your way

Use texture or shape instead of color. A partner can move objects while you choose their groups.
